Fernando Romero ( FREE )

Fernando Romero (*1971 in Mexico City) worked from 1997 to 2000 at the offices of Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam; in 2000 he started his own office, known as Laboratory of Architecture. LAR has a vast collection of designs and buildings that vary from orthogonal to fluid, dynamic, and organic. These cover diverse cultural and commercial programs, such as museums, schools, housing, and offices; and the firm has also visualized many outstanding buildings in international competitions.

This publication contains selected projects that provide an overview of Romero’s visions, designs, and buildings, documenting the office’s accomplishments during its first ten years. These are the result of its experimentation with new materials, implemented with both traditional and innovative building methods, and its rethinking of current discourse in the interest of creating unprecedented spaces.

Frederik Vaes/SAQ

Frederik Vaes is Principal of SAQ. In 1998 he received his Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Hasselt (B). He began his career as a junior architect working on the Villa Rotonda (NL) a collaboration between Mario Botta and Bureau Hoen (NL). Upon its completion in 2000 he became a senior architect at the office of Wiel Arets (NL). Wiel Arets as an early mentor and Arne Quinze's visionary force form the basis of his approach.

Fulton Trotter

Fulton Trotter’s history can be traced back to 1946. Several of Queensland’s historic and iconic buildings have been designed by the practice. Charles Fulton was a pioneer in architectural education in Queensland, and QUT’s architecture faculty is named in his honour: the Charles Fulton School of Architecture. In the 1960s, Stephen Trotter published Cities in the Sun—a seminal text in the acclimatisation of Queensland architecture. Fulton Trotter today comprises three dedicated, full service offices—Brisbane, Tweed Heads and Sydney. Francisco Mangado

Born in Navarre in 1957, Francisco Mangado earned his architecture degree from the University of Navarre School of Architecture in 1982, and has since made this institution the center of his teaching career. Francisco Mangado has been a Guest Professor at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, as well as Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at Yale’s School of Architecture. Francisco Mangado is Studio Professor in the Navarre school’s Master of Architectural Design program and Visiting Professor at l’École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. In June 2008 Francisco Mangado set up the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad, which aims to help increase architecture’s interaction with other fields of knowledge and action.Francisco Mangado architectural practice is combined with this academic activity and foundation work, which he runs from his studio in Pamplona.

For his professional work Francisco Mangado has earned an Andrea Palladio International Architecture Award, a City of Thiene Architecture Award, an Architécti Prize, the FAD and CEOE Awards, and many more. His Plaza Dalí in Madrid won First Prize in the Madrid City Hall’s 20th Urban Planning, Architecture and Public Works Awards (2005 edition).

Francisco Mangado won First Prize in the 2007 Saloni Architectural Awards and the Grand Prize in the Enor Architecture Awards for his Nueva Balastera Football Stadium in Palencia, as well as First Prize for Architecture awarded by the COAL in 2007, in the category of new public buildings, for the Nueva Balastera Soccer Stadium in Palencia.

His Spanish Pavilion at Expo Zaragoza 2008 has merited the following honors: First Prize in the 7th ASCER Ceramic Architecture Awards in 2008, First Prize for Construction at Construmat 2009, the Giancarlo Ius Gold Medal given by the UIA at the 4th Barbara Cappochin International Architecture Biennial in August 2009, and the Fernando García Mercadal Prize of the Aragon Architects Association (COA) the following September. In October 2009, Spain’s National Council of Architects’ Associations proclaimed the Pavilion winner of the National Architecture Prize for an individual work. In September 2009, Mangado’s Archaeology Museum in Vitoria capped the Copper in Architecture Award of the European Copper Institute in London, and in March 2010 it won First Prize in the Civic Construction category of the Basque-Navarrese Institute of Architects Association (COAVN) Awards.

Notable among Francisco Mangado ’s works are the Cultural Center and Church in Thiene (Italy), the Auditorium and Congress Center of Pamplona, the Place Pey Berland in Bordeaux, the Municipal Exhibition and Congress Center of Ávila, the Archaeology Museum of Vitoria, the Football Stadium of Palencia, and the Spanish Pavilion at the 2008 International Exposition in Zaragoza. More recent projects include the Congress Center of Palma de Mallorca, the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias in Oviedo, and an office tower in Buenos Aires.

The Baluarte Auditorium and Congress Center in Pamplona and the Lienzo Norte Exhibition and Congress Center in Ávila were included in the exhibition on Spanish architecture that was held at the MoMA in New York City, as well as in Madrid, in 2006.

Felipe Assadi and Francisca Pulido

Assadi & Pulido was informally established in 1999, and dully established in 2006 with Felipe Assadi and Francisca Pulido as its principal partners. Felipe Assadi and Francisca Pulido has developed projects mainly in Chile, with some participation in Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Peru, USA and Italy. Additionally other three architects and two students in the practical instruction stage are part of the studio.

Felipe Assadi receives the architect degree from the Finis Terrae University, in 1996, and the Master of Architecture degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 2006. In 1999, he was awarded with the Young Graduation Class Award given by the Chilean Association of Architects, award granted to the best less than 35 years architect. Currently, he is a studio teacher at the Andrés Bello University, in Santiago and has been a visiting professor at the Diego Portales and Talca Universities, Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Monterrey in Mexico, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, SLP, Mexico, Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, in Medellín, Colombia. His works have been broadly published around the world in specialized magazines and books. He has participated at exhibitions in Barcelona, Pamplona, London, Quito, Tokyo and Santiago. Currently, he is preparing a case study in the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain.

Francisca Pulido receives the architect degree from the Finis Terrae University in 1996. Currently, she is professor at the Andrés Bello University for the Diploma Studio class, after a three-year period as teacher at the same university where she studied.

FreelandBuck

FreelandBuck is an architectural design practice based in New York and Los Angeles affiliated with Yale and Woodbury Universities. Our office focuses on research and design, exploring the overlap between academia and practice. At a point when digital architecture is nearly two decades old, our work assumes that fabrication and construction can enhance the spatial and sensual qualities of digitally designed form rather than compromise them. By articulating the patterns inherent to structure, construction and material, we invigorate forms and spaces with specific character and rich atmosphere. We seek to design evocative buildings that engage with the 'language' of atmosphere and affect with which we negotiate our social and political worlds. In this context, walls, ceilings and floors become emissive boundaries that infuse space with character, making them habitable and memorable. As environments for human interaction, our work exploits both formal undulation and graphic variation - of pattern, color and material - to synthetically enrich surface and space. At the scale of the city, pattern also holds an inherent organizational logic. Our design research explores complex configurations of natural and infrastructural systems supple enough to insinuate themselves into the existing geometry of the city. Patterning, unlike smooth topological surfaces, collects disparate fragments and allows for moments of inflection: differentiation, distinction, or disillusion within a continuous system. As both an organizational and design strategy, patterning suggests "re-grounding" digital architecture in the material world.

One of the most recent projects include a collaboration with HPP architects and Peutz Acoustical Engineers for the Tonhalle Concerthall in Düsseldorf. Using digital computation, Urban Environments integrated virtual reality based planning and fabrication process to inform the 3-dimensional design and construction of the acoustical treatment of the main auditorium of the landmark concerthall. Among other projects, FRAMA Architects are currently involved in the design and construction of an artists’ living space, a large scale urban planning project in Düsseldorf and a lake house addition in Moers, Germany: all scheduled for completion in 2010. Among other projects, they were also invited to a major competition for a depot museum near Cologne for the federal modern art collection, besides offices like Herzog & De Meuon and Ortner & Ortner.
