Andrew Haythornthwaite and Shai Akram

Andrew Haythornthwaite and Shai Akram began their collaboration shortly after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2006 on the Design Products course headed by Ron Arad. Their projects have taken them to China, New Zealand and now, back to the UK. Completed projects together range from interiors to commercial products, whilst they continue their independent explorations and experiments in their East London studio.

Alberto Brogliato

Alberto Brogliato was born in Schio, Vicenza in 1981.
He got a specialization in Industrial Product Design at IUAV in Venice;During his studies, he joined a lot of projects in collaboration with some companies, like Lotto Italia and Tecnica.
Besides caring about their graphics, he took part in some project for the architecture studio ASA studio albanese in Vicenza.

Since 2006 he is caring about design, research and development and production management for Euro3Plast and PLUSt collection.

Alessandra Pasetti

Alessandra Pasetti is leading DEfrag studio since 1999.
Her extensive experience ranges from fashion to industrial design and from furnitures to sport accessories.
She worked for Koziol, Pianca, Disguincio, Rudy Project, Ferplast, Molecole, Morellato & Sector, Altek, IseaBaggio, Alt luci alternative, Orange Design, Pubblicom. Developing design, comunication and graphic.
Beside her design consultancy she is also teaching Industrial Design and Design Management at the University of Venice, assisting Michele de Lucchi, Anna Lombardi, Enzo Berti, MM Design, Ico Migliore, Naoko Shintani and Setsu Ito.

alvidesign

alvidesign was founded in 2007 by Åsa Kärner, when the alvihanger for clothes, bags and towels, as the first product was launched in Sweden. “My ambition is to design furniture and products, using environmentally friendly materials with a focus on sustainable production methods and humane working conditions. These are the criteria I use as a platform for my design and production.” I studied at Nyckelviksskolan in Stockholm 2006-2007 and is since 2008 doing my Bachelors´ Degree at The Danish Design School in Copenhagen with furniture design and interior architecture as my main subjects. During my education I put a lot of effort in broadening my knowledge in ecological and sustainable design and production. Arian Brekveld

Arian Brekveld (Apeldoorn 1968) graduated at the Eindhoven Design Academy in 1995, after which he worked for three years as a designer on environmental and industrial projects at Ontwerpwerk in the Hague. Since 1998, Brekveld has been working independently from his studio in Rotterdam, where he designs his own products as well as works on assignments. In addition, he is working as the main 3-d designer for JongeriusLab, Hella Jongerius’ agency for more than 10 years. He serves as an important external link in the design and execution of products and assignments.
Brekveld is a designer with many faces; material and concept are indispensable to his work, but the essence of his designership is the detailed execution of a product or specific material. One example is the Softlamp: a small lamp made of dipmolded pvc, that was included in the Droog Collection in1995, and was purchased, among others, by the New York and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It is hardly surprising that the lamp was a popular success; its sympathetic shape, the smooth transition from wire to shade and the material’s transparency, reminiscent of porcelain or opal glass, are convincing setting points.

Arian Brekveld is a very Dutch designer: his work is functional and practical, is produced in considerable quantities and preferably without a great deal of fuss. These elements provide a checklist for his designs. His products do not suffer because the checklist is never used at the expense of the products’ attractiveness. Sober yet carefully crafted designs flow from his worktable. Brekveld’s designs are hardly famous for their elaborate forms. For him, simplicity is a basic necessity.

Antonio Citterio

Antonio Citterio was born in Meda in 1950. He graduated in architecture from Milan Polytechnic and opened his studio in 1972 where he started his architectural and interior design business.
Between 1987 and 1996 he worked in association with Terry Dwan and, together, they created buildings in Europe and Japan. Among his most significant works: the restyling of a block in the historical centre of Seregno, Esprit headquarters in Amsterdam, Antwerp and Milan, industrial plants for Vitra, in Germany, and for Antonio Fusco, in Milan. In 1999 “Antonio Citterio and Partners” was founded by Citterio and Patricia Viel, a multidisciplinary practice for architectural design, industrial design and graphics. Patricia Viel was born in Milano in 1962. She graduated in architecture from Milan Polytechnic in 1987 and she started her collaboration with Antonio Citterio in 1986.
From 2005 she is member of the National Institute of Architecture IN/ARCH. The firm develops projects for residential complexes, apartment buildings, hotels, trade centres, industrial sites, restructuring of public buildings, planning of workspace, offices and showrooms; it is also operational in the field of corporate communication - implementing corporate image projects, fittings, graphics.
From January 2007 the firm is UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 certified.
In the field of industrial design Antonio Citterio works for Italian and foreign companies such as Ansorg, Arclinea, Axor-Hansgrohe, Aubrilam, B&B Italia, Flexform, Flos, Fusital, Guzzini, Iittala, Inda, Kartell, Maxalto, Sanitec Group - Pozzi Ginori, Simon Urmet, Technogym, Tre Più, Vitra. In 2000 the new headquarters opened in Milan, Via Cerva 4, and in May of that same year new offices were opened in Hamburg, 75b Wrangelstrasse. In 2002 the construction of the building where the headquarters of the Edel Company are located, along the Elba river, was completed as well as an office building in Neuerwall, two constructions for offices and textile manufacturing in Legnano and Lecco and the headquarters of the CR&S Centre completed with showroom and offices for B&B Italia in Novedrate. Between 2003 and 2004, a corporate image project was implemented for De Beers (London and Tokyo) and, in May 2004, the Bulgari Hotel was inaugurated in Milan, the first of a chain of luxury hotels known as “Bulgari Hotels and Resorts”. In 2005 the restructuring of the historical Town Hall of Clusone, the project for the headquarters and nursery of the drug company GlaxoSmithKline in Verona, the project for a law firm in Sondrio, Italy were completed; added to this two projects for private house, one in Basel, Switzerland, the other in Sardinia, Italy and the jewellery De Beers in Los Angeles. In September 2006 has been inaugurated the Bulgari Resort in Bali, the Aspesi showroom in Milan and the pedestrian square “Michele Alboreto” in Rozzano. In 2007 the Bulgari restaurant and cafè opened in Tokyo, Ginza district.
In January 2008 was completed the building for the New Ermenegildo Zegna Headquarters.
The project for the new “Technogym Village” in Cesena (production site, offices and trade centre), a new square in Busto Arsizio; the functional restructuring, furniture and security of the Southern Pier in Marina di Ravenna, the renovation of the urban ex-Martinelli area in Morbegno, all in Italy, master planning and private houses are underway. Antonio Citterio and Partners took part in a great number of international competitions.
In 2004: project in cooperation with other architects to change the historical centre of Fiera Milano into a new urban centre; project for the building of the “Brooktorhafen” bridge in the new “Hafencity” district in Hamburg; project to enlarge a new multifunctional school building and a kindergarten for the Deutsche School in Milan. In the same year, together with other architects, he won the competition for the functional arrangement, street furniture and security systems of Molo Guardiano sud / Marina di Ravenna, which was presented on the occasion of the 9th International Exhibition of Architecture of the Biennale of Venice, section “Towns on Water”. In the year 2004, publishing company Electa launched the monography “Antonio Citterio Industrial design”.
In 2005, Antonio Citterio and Partners won the competition for the project of an hotel in the Hafencity district in Hamburg and received the 2nd prize at the international design competition for the hotel facilities in the new exhibition grounds of Rho-Pero.
In the same year the Neumühlen project receives the 2nd prize from the Hamburg Architektur Preis and a special mention from the Deutscher Architektur Preis.
Still in 2005, written by Luigi Prestinenza Pugliesi and published by Edilstampa, the monography “Antonio Citterio” has been issued.
In the same year, he received 2nd prize at the design competition for Parco Levante Cesenatico and wins the international architectural competition for the renovation of the Ferrante Aporti building (former Italian post office) in Milan.
In 2007: the Mies van der Rohe Award jury selects the project for the GlaxoSmithKline day nursery in Verona; the Italian publishing house Skira issued the monograph “Antonio Citterio. Architettura e Design”; 2nd prize at the international design competition for the Diocesano Museum in Milan. From 2006, Antonio Citterio is professor at the Accademia di Architettura dell’Università della Svizzera Italiana and from 2007 he is member of the Italian Design Council.
In 2007 he received the “Royal Designer for Industry” award from the “Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce” in London.

ACHILLE CASTIGLIONI

Born in Milan in 1918, he graduated in Architecture in 1944. Since 1940 he had dedicated himself to experimenting on industrial products with his brothers Livio ((1911-1979) and Pier Giacomo (1913-1968).
Their interests were directed towards Urban Planning, Architecture and Design; they performed analysis and research on new forms, techniques and materials, aimed at developing a process of “integral design”.
In 1969, he was nominated Professor of “Artistic Industrial Design”; he chaired the Faculty of Architecture in Turin until 1980 and taught in Milan until 1993 as Professor of “Industrial Design” at the Polytechnic of Milan.
In 1956 he was one of the founders of ADI (Association for Design Industry). MoMA’s permanent collection in New York hosts 14 of his works.
Other works may be found in the following museums: Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Kunstgewerbe Museum in Zurich, Staatliches Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Munich, Design Museum in Prato, Umeleckoprumyslove Museum in Prague, Israel Museum in Jerusalem, The Denver Art Museum, Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Angewandte Kunst Museum in Hamburg and Koln.

Alexandra Jefford

Alexandra Jefford was born and raised in Geneva and lives in London. She studied fine art at Central St Martins, concentrating on etching and drawing. She first pursued a career as an artist and illustrator then began designing jewellery in 2002. She was commissioned by the V&A to design a piece for the museum based on their Japanese Collection in 2005 and was one of four top British designers to be showcased at International Jewellery London in 2005. She has also exhibited at White Cube gallery, London in 2006 and Perimeter Gallery (Paris) in 2008. A selection of her jewellery is presented permanently in the Rei Kawabuko’ s famous concept store Dover Street and the artist Damien Hirst’s new venture Other Criteria , both in London. In Los Angeles she is represented by Roseark and in Paris by Perimeter Art/Design Gallery. Her jewellery has been featured in many publications including US and UK Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Wallpaper, The New York Times and the Times. Alexandra Jefford’s approach to jewellery is inspired by her passion for modern art and design. This gives her creations a unique edge, making her jewellery pieces not only beautiful and seductive ornaments but also objects with a conceptual and formal interest for collectors in the Art and Design world. All her pieces are unique.

Atelier Van Lieshout

Atelier Van Lieshout´s workshop is situated in a large old warehouse in the harbours of Rotterdam. The building, Katoenveem, is an industrial monument, since it is one of the first warehouses of concrete. It was build by architect J. J. Kanters in 1920. The warehouse was originally used to store cotton in. Artworks and a host of other products begin their lives here before travelling to points around the globe. The workshop has different departments, a fibreglass, sculpture, wood, and metal workshops. Atelier Van Lieshout’s 20 employees have different backgrounds and origins. The designers are closely involved in the manufacturing process of each product. Design and making of the art works all take place in this workshop.

Analogue Life

Analogue Life focuses primarily on contemporary Japanese housewares. Whether mass produced, or handmade by artisans or craftsman, the emphasis is on simplicity , functionality and plain old good design.

It used to be not long ago that if we mentioned Japanese design, it immediately conjured images of lacquer bowls, tatami mats, shoji screens and ukiyoe prints. Those things are all great. But contemporary Japanese designers working sometimes in collaboration with traditional craftmen have applied the traditions of simplicity, elegance, and harmony beyond those, to a variety of household goods. Analogue Life hopes to offer international customers a range of well crafted, well designed products that reflects what is being designed and produced today.

Analogue Life does carry some items from outside Japan. George Peterson's exceptional, hand turned wood bowls and Kirsten Hectermanns beautiful hand carved wood spoons from Kenya (via London), to name a few.

Atelierdorp

Atelierdorp
Where once people prayed devotedly to God, now people work with a similar devotion on concepts that conquer the world. This devotion is not only focussed on their work but just so much on doing good to the world. With faith in the fact that spreading the right energy and conceptualizing what the world and the people need today, the people of Atelierdorp think of how to make this world a better place. Not as a rigid religion, but as a way of working, of collaborating, of sharing.
They all finished their education at Design Academy Eindhoven and since then stone by stone built up their career from this special place – de Van Aars Kerk - , that was offered as a temporarily working space by the Housing Corporation Woonbedrijf. In this church people have been working inventively on ideas and products that went travelling through the world. The designers of Atelierdorp have been exhibiting in Milano or Miami or any other place in the world. They sold their work through world famous galleries, to sometimes world famous customers. No visitor of any importance in the design industry left Eindhoven before visiting this church. But then this global range of activities does not make them less aware of the environment they live in. With the people in the neighbourhood and schoolkids they have been working on a project like Buurt Etalage: to stimulate happier living in this somewhat deprived neighbourhood. Poems on the walls, happy animals in the street. A project that make people living there, proud of their environment that radiates now with more positive energy. Atelierdorp would like to spread this kind of working all over Eindhoven. A positive and creative energy that can be shared with schoolkids in workshops, with people in neighbourhoods in coffee sessions, with entrepreneurs. Furthermore they offer working space to student designers that benefit from their coaching during the finalization of their graduation projects. With faith in the motto that one and one makes three, that collaboration in openness pays itself back in sharing costs and facilities, feedback, exposure , the collective of Atelierdorp - although consisting of people of different origins - demonstrate the spirit that is so characteristic for Eindhoven and the region.

Arik Levy

"Design is an uncontrolled muscle" according to Arik Levy (born 1963).
Designer, technician, artist, photographer, filmmaker, Arik Levy's skills are multi-disciplinary
and his work can be seen in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide.
Best known publicly for his furniture design for global companies, installations and limited editions,
Arik Levy nevertheless feels "The world is about people, not tables and chairs."

Hailing originally from Israel and moving to Europe in 1988, Arik Levy currently works in Paris
with his 20-strong team of designers and graphic artists forming L design.
Under the vision of Arik Levy and his associate, Pippo Lionni, the firm also produces brand identities, packaging, signage, exhibition and interior design…

Arik Levy formation was unconventional where surfing and his graphic design studio took up much of his time back home.
However, following studies at the Art Center Europe in Switzerland where he gained a distinction in Industrial Design in 1991, Arik Levy's first international success was winning
the Seiko Epson Inc. competition, which jettisoned him into the public consciousness as a "thinking" designer.

After a stint in Japan where Arik Levy consolidated his ideas producing products and pieces for exhibitions, the designer returned to Europe where he contributed his artistry to another field - contemporary dance and opera by way of set design.

The creation of Arik Levy firm then meant a foray back to his first love, Art and industrial design, as well as other branches of his talents. Respected for his furniture and light designs on all continents, Arik Levy also creates hi-tech clothing lines and accessories for firms in the Far East.

Considering himself now more of a "feeling" designer, Arik Levy continues to contribute substantially to our interior and exterior milieu, his work including public sculpture - his signature Rock pieces - as well as complete environments that can be adapted for multi use. "Life is a system of signs and symbols", he says, "where nothing is quite as it seems."

Adrien Rovero Studio

Born in 1981 in Switzerland, Adrien Rovero, already the holder of a CFC in interior design and a Bachelor in industrial design, received his Master diploma in industrial design in 2006 from the Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne, ECAL (where he is now teaching) and open adrien rovero studio the same year.
Since then, Adrien Rovero has a double activity of research and industrial production by associating the market and institution context.

Arne Quinze

aina alto

Aino Aalto’s bold principles live on in the Aino Aalto glassware collection. Her fresh creations continue to provide simple pleasure to young and old the world over. This contemporary glassware, which today comes in different colors, can be combined with every object that Iittala produces, and sits comfortably in any scenario.

Born Aino Marsio (1894-1949), she married esteemed architect and glass designer Alvar Aalto in 1924. She won the 1932 iittala-Karhula design competition in Finland and the gold prize at the Milan Triennale in 1936 for her functionalist glassware collection. Aino Aalto’s namesake design is iittala’s oldest product and stands for the epitome of mindmade design.

Aino Aalto fought habit by challenging people to accept radically new lines and forms that still fulfilled the same needs. Her design philosophy clashed with her times.
