Custo Barcelona

The Dalmau brothers, Custo and David, created Custo Barcelona in the early 80’s after a long trip during which they travelled all around the world. Their journey allowed them to discover not only new landscapes but the most varied of artistic, cultural and philosophical expressions.
Amongst the things they found to be most worthy of interest were the typically Californian style they saw on the surfers who lived in the southern part of the state and the psychedelic look they observed in the northern part. The brothers were impressed by the colorful and innovative fashion trends they came across, and in particular the style of the tops and T-shirts which didn’t exist in Spain in those days. Using the above as a starting point, the brand was launched under the name “Custo Line”.
The Dalmau brothers got to work and learned everything there was to know about printing techniques and finishings, paying special attention to graphic design, a field they felt particularly comfortable with. Through time, their research on the use of color and prints has given risen rise to designs that are innovative, bold and sophisticated. Later on, all kinds of new garments were introduced to complement Custo Barcelona’s trademark printed tops, like skirts, trousers and coats, thus giving rise to complete collections.
Nowadays it could be said that Custo Barcelona is a style in itself; one that, to a certain extent, embodies a specific lifestyle.

Christian shows a full collection every season at New York Fashion Week, and his designs have appeared in the most respected fashion magazines around the world. Christian Lacroix

Christian Lacroix was born in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône in southern France. At a young age he began sketching historical costumes and fashions. Lacroix graduated from high school in 1969 and moved to Montpellier, to study Art History at the University of Montpellier. In 1971, he enrolled at the Sorbonne in Paris. While working on a dissertation on dress in French 18th-century painting, Lacroix also pursued a program in museum studies at the École du Louvre. His aspiration during this time was to become a museum curator. It was during this time he met his future wife Françoise Rosenthiel, whom he married in 1974.

Christian Dior

Christian Dior was born in Granville, a seaside town on the coast of France.
His family, whose fortune was derived from the manufacture of fertilizer, had hopes he would become a diplomat, but Dior only wished to be involved in mostly fashion, but sketching as well.
To make money, he sold his fashion sketches outside his house for about 10 cents each.
After leaving school he received money from his father so that in 1928 he could open a small art gallery, where he sold art by the likes of Pablo Picasso.
After a family financial disaster that resulted in his father losing his business, Christian Dior was forced to close the gallery.
From the 1930s to the 1940s he worked with Robert Piguet until being called up for military service.
In 1942, having left the Army, Dior joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong, where he and Pierre Balmain were the primary designers.
For the duration of World War II, Christian Dior dressed the wives of the Nazi officers and French collaborators. On 16 December 1946 Dior founded his own fashion house, backed by Marcel Boussac, the cotton-fabric magnate.

Celine

Originally launched in 1945 as a children's made-to-measure shoe business for petits pieds d'anges, the French luxury house expanded during the sixties with adult footwear, handbags, and a women's ready-to-wear collection of couture sportswear or "fashion for everyone." During this time, Celine was one of the first luxury brands to open up distribution to Japan, and their focus on international expansion continued over the next few decades. Besides their flagship Left Bank boutique, shops can be found in cosmopolitan cities such as Monte Carlo, Geneva, Hong Kong, and Rome, where the high-end wearable separates, such as swinging skirts, fitted shirts, and soft knits and accessories—belts, boots, shoes, and bags—with a distinct sexy, city-girl appeal are sold. Helmed for over forty years by Madame Céline Vipiana, Michael Kors took the reins in 1997, but upon his departure in 2004, the collection lost much of the buzz he brought to the label as head designer. After Kors, ex-Burberry designer Roberto Menichetti struggled for one year as head designer. He was succeeded by Ivana Omazic, and in September 2008 the label announced that ex-Chloe visionary Phoebe Philo would step in to take the reins, beginning with a fall 2009 collection.

Comme Des Garcons

Comme Des Garcons is a high end fashion line created by Rei KawaKubo. His fashion line specializes in clothing but has also branched out into fragrances and perfume as well. This japanese fashion designer and company is considered to be one of the most trendy and fashion forward companies out of japan. This website aims to bring you helpful information and articles about Comme Des Garcon and its products.
The owner and founder of Comme des Garcons is Rei Kawakubo. This company, a private one, opened for business in the fashion industry in 1969. Since the opening of the company, there are now more than 12 boutiques and at least 200 merchants worldwide. One location considered high fashion in Tokyo (Aoyama) has flagship depots and one called “Place Vendome in Paris”, which is highly famous for its fashion line too. The business brings in annual revenue of approximately $150,000,000 (gross revenue). As of 2007, the business employed around 200 individuals.
Although Rei Kawakubo founded and opened the business in 1969, the company was not officially established until a few years later, in 1973. In Japan, the business became triumphant in the fashion industry in the mid-70s and added to their product line, for men, in 1978. In 1981, there was a show in the Paris location, which was a first appearance of Comme des Garcons and its leading fashion in “distressed” and “black” materials used in the clothing line. During the 1980s, this line of apparel frequently had a shattered appearance to it. Once the debut in Paris completed, the company displayed pictures at some famous fashion locations in Paris. The pictures were the work of Peter Lindbergh. About 20 years later, another debut occurred in Tokyo. The debut consisted of marketing and illustrative sketches.

Carmen Marc Valvo

Carmen Marc Valvo
In 1989 Carmen Marc Valvo set out on a path that would unknowingly lead him to found his eponymous label and become one of 7th avenue most steadfast independent brands.
Carmen Marc Valvo has been exploring his soul’s desire to bring glamorous dressing to every woman’s life ever since. Carmen Marc Valvo elegant evening wear is now a staple at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, Nordstroms, Bergdorf Goodman, and countless other specialty stores nationally and internationally.
TIME Magazine stood up and took notice of Carmen Marc Valvo after his Fall 2005 collection in a feature story saying “While other designers seek to shock, Valvo’s creations shine in the marketplace.”
Carmen Marc Valvo label now appears on grand couture gowns and slinky cocktail dresses, his swimwear is a best seller at Victoria’s Secret, sunglasses / eyewear, lingerie, home décor (launching Spring 2009) and his first collection of evening bags (launching Fall 2009), rounding out the designer’s extensive brand.
Along the way, Carmen Marc Valvo designs have ended up on some of the World’s most sophisticated, talented, and glamorous women.
From HRH Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Queen Latifah, Beyonce, Katie Couric, Leona Lewis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Vanessa Williams, Kate Winslet, Eva Longoria, and Mary J. Blige just to name a few, to fashionable films such as this season’s hit Confessions of a Shopaholic.
Carmen Marc Valvo has proven to be a dedicated scholar of his craft, carefully honing his skills to master the fine art of cutting and draping fabric to enhance the female physique so that every customer feels like a star on the red carpet when they walk into a room wearing one of his creations.
Carmen Marc Valvo grew up in a traditional Spanish/Italian family in Westchester County, New York. His artistic spirit revealed itself early on, when he developed a passion for oil painting and crafted opulent medieval costumes for his sister for a school project. But it wouldn’t be until much later that he would even consider becoming a designer. “I honestly didn’t think it was a real profession,” he admits.
Carmen Marc Valvo father worked as an anesthesiologist and his mother as a nurse, so it is not surprising that they hoped he would one day join the medical profession, specifically as a plastic surgeon. But after volunteering to work a few sessions in the ER, he turned, instead, to a degree in Fine Arts at Manhattanville College. After spending a few years traveling in Europe — exploring the rich cultural tapestry and becoming proficient in several languages — a car accident would force Carmen Marc Valvo to returned to the United States but allowed him to set his sites on a career in fashion. After his recovery, Carmen Marc Valvo enrolled at Parsons School of Design in New York. Valvo’s professional career began as a ready to wear designer for Nina Ricci in Paris, followed by a stint at Christian Dior. But by 1989 he was ready to launch his own label.
With only a few thousand dollars, Carmen Marc Valvo fearlessly pulled together a collection to show to department and specialty stores at the fall market in New York. His sportswear was an instant success and was bought into several top stores, but it was his eveningwear, his true passion, that captured the hearts of buyers at both Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. Having established a solid reputation with his Collection line, Carmen Marc Valvo launched Carmen Marc Valvo Couture in 1998, in response to overwhelming demand from his celebrity and VIP clients, who wanted original Carmen Marc Valvo creations that would set them apart from the fashion pack.
The Couture collection is presented twice a year during the New York Fashion Week. These lavish presentations highlight the extraordinary craftsmanship and painstaking hand-detailing that place the Couture collection in a league of its own. The world of Carmen Marc Valvo also includes CMV by Carmen Marc Valvo, and a popular swimwear collection. Carmen is an Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) Ambassador and has given both his time and money to the organization, which has helped raise Millions of dollars for Colon Cancer Research. Carmen has always utilized his designs to help with many causes over the years, but especially the NCCRA (National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance). As a colon cancer survivor, Carmen Marc Valvo has been working with Katie Couric, since she partnered with 7th on Sixth in 2004, to bring attention and support of research of this deadly disease.
Carmen Marc Valvo efforts, on behalf of the organization, were honored at a gala in March 2006 in New York where Carmen received the first ever Advocate Award from Katie Couric.

In 2008 Carmen appeared with his dear friend Vanessa Williams in a national broadcast and print public service campaign to encourage early screening for colon cancer. And while Valvo’s parents may have been on the right track when they imagined their son making women more beautiful (albeit through a career in plastic surgery), they could have hardly imagined he would realize this dream with a needle and thread rather than a scalpel.
But it is Carmen Marc Valvo ’s superb tailoring, understanding of fit issues and masterful detailing that have distinguished Carmen Marc Valvo from his peers. Women’s Wear Daily perhaps said it best “Over the years, the designer has demonstrated the talent to do it all.”
