threefoldarchitects

threefoldarchitects was established to make innovative and exciting, contemporary architecture that delights visually and experientially; an architecture that enhances its environment and benefits the lives of the people who experience it. Founding partners Matthew Driscoll & Jack Hosea have combined a wide range of experience in housing, arts & cultural projects through their work at a number of award winning practices. Renée Searle joined as a partner at the beginning of 2009 bringing with her both an expert knowledge of sustainable construction technologies and a broad range of experience of running large scale housing and education projects. As a senior team we have a comprehensive knowledge of a diverse range of areas including planning negotiation, working with listed buildings, education, residential refurbishment & extensions, sustainable new build housing design and materials technology. As a practice we don’t have a ‘house style’, every design draws upon the knowledge that we have gained from past experiences but above all we treat each new project as an opportunity to create something innovative and unique. We pride ourselves in our ability to bring excellent design solutions to every project and to communicate effectively with clients, consultants and contractors to complete projects on time and on budget. To date our work has won awards, competitions, created successful places and spaces, and surprised, delighted and satisfied our clients. We are proud of what we have created so far but we continually strive to exceed expectations and better our achievements in the future.

Tamarkin Co

Deceptively simple, painstakingly crafted, and transcending all fashion, the dignified buildings created by Tamarkin Co. highlight the enduring qualities of modernism, as well as founder Cary Tamarkin’s uncompromising vision of timeless design and the highest quality.
Tamarkin, a Harvard-graduated architect, founded Tamarkin Co. in 1994 to merge the business of real estate development with the art of architecture. The result is a highly curated portfolio of residential condominium buildings that includes the standard-setting conversions of the warehouses 140 Perry Street and 206 West 17th Street into raw-space loft apartments. Tamarkin Co.’s new buildings have also garnered acclaim for their design and sensitivity to the urban context. 47 East 91st Street was the first new residential building in Carnegie Hill to be approved by The NYC Landmark’s Preservation Commission in over 50 years. 495 West Street led the wave of new residential development along the West Village waterfront and was the recipient of an American Institute of Architects Honor Award.
On the rare occasion that Tamarkin Co. accepts an architectural design commission, the process is rigorous and the results are impeccable, as evidenced by two recent houses in Shelter Island and Woodstock.
Ranging from challenging conversions of historic structures to carefully considered and beautifully crafted new buildings, Tamarkin Co. residences meld pragmatism and poetry. The quiet modernism that is the company’s signature is subtle, long lasting and widely regarded as the standard-bearer for true luxury.

Taalman Koch Architecture
Taalman Koch Architecture is a collaborative architecture firm based in Los Angeles.
Linda Taalman and Alan Koch are the creative directors and principal architects. As partners for over 12 years they have cultivated a collaborative method of working with clients and multidisciplinary teams that has resulted in numerous award winning and internationally published and exhibited projects.
Starting from their earliest collaborations with artists in their Trespassing: Houses x Artists project they developed a unique ability for customizing the design process to facilitate creative solutions.
Taalman and Koch were partners in charge, under the banner of OpenOffice, for the acclaimed Dia : Beacon museum (AIA NY Merit Award). By incorporating research into their practice they have continued to develop speculative work that expands their field of architectural exploration. Taalman Koch Architecture research into off-site fabricated building technologies led to the development of the award winning itHouse system (AIA LA Merit Award, Sunset Western Home Award). Currently they are designing houses, classrooms and temporary structures that are both economical and sustainable using this system. Taalman Koch Architecture have directed, assisted and facilitated art installations and public art projects, from their Small Skyscraper collaboration with Chris Burden (Art Basel), Ft. Lauderdale Airport Art and Exhibition master plan, a multi year installation in the High Desert Test Sites in collaboration with Kathleen Johnson, and their recent commission from the For-Site Foundation to create an animal habitat and sculpture in the Presidio in San Francisco. Each new project is viewed as an opportunity to explore how design fits in the world at large – from initial discovery and brainstorming phases, to new fabrication technologies and non-linear construction practices.
Since 1997, Taalman & Koch have collaborated extensively with artists and arts institutions, demonstrating a commitment to the pursuit of a thriving relationship between art and architecture.
Both Taalman & Koch are registered architects in California and New York.

Tokujin Yoshioka

Tokujin Yoshioka was born in Japan in 1967 and, after having studied at length with Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, in 2000 set up his studio, Tokujin Yoshioka Design, in Tokyo.
His partnership with Issey Miyake has been in existence for over 20 years. Tokujin Yoshioka has taken part in a number of projects by the fashion designer, designing among other things Issey Miyake and A-POC stores and producing the installation entitled Issey Miyake Making Things for the Cartier foundation in Paris, achieving international fame.
Tokujin Yoshioka came to the Milan furniture show for the first time in 2002, presenting the chairs Honey Pop and Tokyo Pop for Driade.
Again for Driade, in the same year, he designed an extraordinary installation, transforming the entire space, in the heart of Milan, into a futuristic Japanese garden.
His other projects include the TOFU lamp produced for Yamagiwa, the STARDUST chandelier designed for Swarovski Crystal Palace, shop windows for Hermes and the Toyota stand at the Tokyo motor show.
One of the most recent and interesting experimental design works by Tokujin Yoshioka is the Pane Chair presented at last year's Milan furniture show.
The name comes from the production process of the chair, similar to baking bread. The material is inserted in a mould and, as when bread is baked, placed in an oven. The fibres stiffen and memorise the shape of the mould through the effect of the heat. At the end of "cooking" the finished chair is taken out.
The Pane Chair played a major role at the exhibition Tokujin Yoshioka x Lexus L-Finesse - Evolving Fiber Technology, staged at the Museo della Permanente in Milan. On that occasion Tokujin Yoshioka created an installation with more than 7000 km of optical fibres, transforming the space into a giant lens.
In the autumn of 2006 he presented his solo exhibition entitled Tokujin Yoshioka - Super Fiber Revolution, at the Axis gallery in Tokyo, seen as the completion of his research and experimental study of materials. Concurrently the British publishers Phaidon published the monograph book entitled Tokujin Yoshioka Design, distributed worldwide, which describes his experimental design, always in pursuit of new possibilities for future developments.
Tokujin Yoshioka has received a number of awards and his works are displayed in the permanent collections of the most prestigious museums in the world: the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Vitra Design Museum in Berlin and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
