FRAMA Architects

FRAMA Architects is an architectural design and research firm that functions within various cross-disciplinary design fields. The firm’s committed professional network includes architects, engineers, landscape architects and artists of various intellectual and specialized design expertise.

Since its founding by Mark Mückenheim and Frank Zeising, the Firm has worked on a number of award winning projects that encompass a diverse range of schemes and programs of various scales and locations.

FRAMA Architects render themselves independent of any design boundaries or methods: each encountered problem is different and is treated as such. The guiding force behind their work follows a conceptually driven design approach. Their practice is therefore a resultant of intense project oriented research that is informed through the active engagement of teaching, research and collaboration with different architecture schools. This integrated design attitude allows for the architecture to develop from the different parameters set by the client, site, location and the specific requirements of any given assignment.

In addition to these methods, the office also applies the latest computer technology and utilizes algorithms, digital routines, and computer aided fabrication to inform, economize and stimulate the design and building process. Their diverse portfolio ranges from concrete architectural projects of different scales and complexity to “speculations” – architectural visions that cross the boundaries of the field, informing the design potential of the office. And recently small scale but interesting build work.

One of the most recent projects include a collaboration with HPP architects and Peutz Acoustical Engineers for the Tonhalle Concerthall in Düsseldorf. Using digital computation, Urban Environments integrated virtual reality based planning and fabrication process to inform the 3-dimensional design and construction of the acoustical treatment of the main auditorium of the landmark concerthall. Among other projects, FRAMA Architects are currently involved in the design and construction of an artists’ living space, a large scale urban planning project in Düsseldorf and a lake house addition in Moers, Germany: all scheduled for completion in 2010. Among other projects, they were also invited to a major competition for a depot museum near Cologne for the federal modern art collection, besides offices like Herzog & De Meuon and Ortner & Ortner.

Since its founding, the office of FRAMA Architects has been featured in various international book and journal publications and has also gained reputation through a number of exhibitions in Germany and abroad.
