Sutherland Hussey Architects
Charlie Sutherland and Charlie Hussey studied together at the Mackintosh School of Architecture before going on to both work for the late Sir James Stirling. After six years working for Stirling, Charlie Hussey spent a brief period in Italy working for Renzo Piano. During this time Charlie Sutherland took on the role of associate at Michael Wilford and associate in charge of the new British embassy in Berlin and the Lowry centre in Salford. Colin Harris, joined the practice after it was established in the late nineties, having worked temporarily for Zaha Hadid in London and Marchese Partners, in Sydney and became the third director in 2006. Each director continues to teach part time at Mackintosh School of Architecture.
the current projects within the office reflect the ethos of diversity rather than specialisation. the priority in all projects is to start from first principles, approaching each design problem with almost empirical objectivity. it is believed that through the omission of preconceived ideas the process will always throw new light on the creative potential of the programme and site. this ideaology is manifested by the directors and sha associate, nicky thomson, who guide each project team within the studio environment. the studio has an informal and open atmosphere which enables extensive input from all team members, consultants and clients.
